How to get your lips looking great with Lip Fillers

The “right” lip and the “wrong” lip

Lips fillers are a relatively easy procedure to perform but as a consumer, the only lips you typically remember are the bad lips you see out there. The typical “duck lip” or “trout lip”, these are what you may see on the “Real Housewives.” That’s not what we want for our patients, where it’s blatantly obvious that you had a lip procedure and everyone is staring at your lips. That's terrible.

Why a plastic surgeon is more qualified to perform lip fillers

There are plenty of people who there are qualified to provide lip injections but the advantage of having a plastic surgeon perform your lip fillers is we have the knowledge and experience to take into account the whole face and figure out what is going to be perfect for that person. I perform a full facial analysis while understanding what the patient’s needs and wants are before I start injecting their lips.

Choosing the right hyaluronic formula depending on your lips

I also am very selective when I choose the right product and formula that is appropriate for the person and their needs.

Younger patients and subtle lip fillers

There are some hyaluronic injections that are just a little bit thinner and a little softer. These formulas are the ones I would recommend for a younger patient who wants a very subtle lift of the lips. The way I describe it to patients is that it kind of looks like your lips actually have a permanent lip gloss, it has a slightly more full and youthful look.

Older patients with thinning lips

A patient who has an aging lip that has significant volume loss and now their lips are very thin, the red lip is not visible, and their lips have “turned in,” they need a little bit more structure. In this case, I use a different kind of filler for that still hyaluronic acid, but a firmer, thicker formula that can actually give us a little bit more structure.

Performing Lip Fillers the right way

There's a lot of thought that goes into doing this well for each individual person and it's certainly not a procedure where “everyone's done the same way and you blast in a cc of Juvederm and send somebody on the way”.

It's not like that. We perform lip fillers very carefully.

I have a patient hold the mirror and we're going to go slow. If it's their first lip, most certainly slow. But even if it's your second or third time you're having lip fillers performed, I want it to be just right.

We go slow and the patient can actually see their lips change since it’s an awake procedure. It can be fun for them as they see the lip structure appear in real-time and we can get their lips looking exactly as they want.
